Local context
Solar in Tullamore
Offaly is at the centre of Ireland's just transition. The wind-down of peat extraction and the closure of the peat-fired stations reshaped employment and energy across the county, and left behind both a workforce familiar with energy infrastructure and a strong local appetite for what replaces it. Solar conversations in Offaly tend to start from a more informed place than average, and we find people ask sharper questions here.
The town itself carries a mix of Georgian and Victorian building stock along the Grand Canal and around the centre, substantial estate housing from the boom years, and a working industrial and distribution base — including long-established manufacturing and the activity around the Midland Regional Hospital. Commercial roofs in and around the town are generally modern, large and well suited to a sizeable array.
Beyond the town, the county runs to cutaway bog and reclaimed land with dispersed agricultural holdings and a good deal of single-dwelling rural housing. Rural properties here often have outbuildings, sheds and detached garages — which frequently makes a ground-mounted or shed-mounted array a better answer than the house roof.
What we look for here
Tullamore-specific considerations
What a survey in Tullamore tends to focus on.
Sheds and outbuildings are often the better roof
On rural Offaly properties the house is not always the best mounting surface. A large south-facing shed roof with no shading and easy cable access can carry a bigger, cheaper-to-install array than a complicated dwelling roof.
Protected structures near the canal and town centre
Some of the older buildings in and around the centre are protected structures or sit in architectural conservation areas, where planning exemptions for solar do not apply in the usual way. We check the status of your specific property before designing anything.
Ground-mount is realistic where land allows
Where there is unused ground and no roof suited to a decent array, a ground-mounted system removes the roof constraint entirely and allows optimal orientation and tilt. It carries its own planning considerations, which we work through with you.
