Local context
Solar in Athlone
Athlone straddles the Shannon and the Westmeath–Roscommon boundary, and its building stock reflects that spread. Period terraces and townhouses near the centre and around the castle sit alongside decades of estate housing out towards Monksland, Cornamaddy and Retreat, and newer low-density builds further out again. Those are three very different roofs, and they call for three different approaches to mounting, cable routing and inverter siting.
The town also carries a substantial commercial and light-industrial base — the business parks along the Blyry and Monksland corridors, the medtech and pharma employers around the town, and the campus activity associated with TUS. Large, uncluttered, relatively modern roofs on single-storey industrial units are close to ideal for commercial solar, and the daytime load profile of a manufacturing or logistics operation lines up well with when a system actually generates.
Because the Shannon splits the town, we work either side of the river routinely — Westmeath side or Roscommon side, it changes nothing about how a job is run.
What we look for here
Athlone-specific considerations
What a survey in Athlone tends to focus on.
Older town-centre roofs need a proper structural look
Slate roofs on period properties near the centre are perfectly viable for solar, but they need care — condition of battens and rafters, existing slate condition and how flashings are dressed all matter more than on a modern concrete-tile roof. We assess this at survey rather than assuming it.
Industrial roofs on the business parks are strong candidates
Trapezoidal metal roofs on the Blyry and Monksland units generally take a non-penetrative or clamped mounting system, install quickly and carry large arrays. If your operation runs machinery through the working day, most of what you generate is consumed on site rather than exported.
Shading from mature trees on the older estates
Several of the established residential areas around the town have significant mature planting. Shade does not rule out solar, but it changes the design — panel-level optimisation or a different string layout can recover most of the loss where a simple layout would not.

Simple process
Getting started in Athlone
Four steps from a first phone call to a system generating on your roof.
Talk to us
Call us or send an enquiry. We ask about your building, your bills and what you want solar to do — before anyone talks about panels.
Free site survey
An engineer visits, assesses your roof, shading and electrical setup, and designs a system sized to your actual consumption.
Grant & installation
We guide you through the grant application and handle the installer and grid-notification paperwork, then install and commission the system with as little disruption as possible.
Generate & monitor
Your system goes live, you can see what it produces from your phone, and we stay available for servicing and support.
Grants
Grant support you can claim
We guide the application and handle the installer paperwork as part of the job. Below is what the three main schemes are worth — and the conditions that actually decide whether you qualify.
